Medi-TrakMedi-Trak

The telemetry expertise that for many years has supported wildlife research and conservation lends itself ideally to locating and monitoring people as well. Used extensively by caregivers around Australia, Titley Electronics has been an integral part of this industry for over fifteen years.

Our system is called Medi-Trak. It has been used extensively with both adults and children who, for a variety of reasons, may be prone to wandering. In our State of New South Wales, the Medi-Trak system has the endorsement and support of the NSW Police Service, where local police stations often hold the 'tracking' equipment (receiver and antenna), and aid in searches when required.

The Medi-Trak system consists of a miniature radio transmitter, which is worn either as a small pendant around the neck, or encased in a man's belt (actually a money-belt, where the transmitter is placed inside the zipped compartment). The transmitter emits a silent signal, which is detected by a radio telemetry receiver, and then tracked with a directional-finding antenna.

The pendant has a continuous 24 hour transmission life of 4 months, (the belt 5 months), before requiring a change of battery. The antenna receives signals from the radio transmitter on a line-of-sight basis, so the less obstructed the path of the signal, the further the tracking range. The average signal range in an urban environment is around 1 kilometre, as buildings and other obstacles can obstruct the signal. In a rural area it is not uncommon to see ranges of 5 kilometres, out to 10 - 20 kilometres if tracking from a hilltop or other higher vantage point, and these transmitters are often tracked at ranges of 30 - 100 kilometres from aircraft.

We also offer an omni-directional whip antenna intended for roof mounting on a vehicle, allowing the signal to be detected in a 360 degree radius, at which time a directional antenna could be used to pinpoint the location.
